Make and Reuse Creative Workshops: Sustainable Print Techniques, with Hanna Whiteman

Discover the creative potential of sustainable printmaking in this immersive four-day workshop led by eco-conscious print designer Hanna Whiteman.

Explore innovative ways to create natural dyes and screen-printing inks using locally sourced food waste such as onion skins, carrot tops, and avocado stones—materials collected from Portobello Market and nearby restaurants.

What to expect over four days:

  • Day 1: Introduction to silk screen printing, equipment, and terminology. Learn about natural dyes, create 6-8 colours, and transform them into sustainable screen-printing inks. Test inks on small screens to make colour swatches for a dye book and explore colour overlays. Create 2-3 modified inks using citric acid and iron oxide.
  • Day 2: Paint an original design in gouache on A2 paper, matching colours to printing inks. Draw inspiration from flowers and foliage to block out stencil areas. Trace the three colourways onto newsprint and cut stencils with scalpels.
  • Day 3: Register prints on paper, prepare screens with tape, and print the first colourway, drying between layers. Continue with the second colourway.
  • Day 4: Print the third colourway and finish any incomplete work. Assess final editions, touch up bald patches, and reflect on what has been learned. Discuss challenges and future natural dye research.

Priority spaces on our Make and Reuse programme are offered to the North Kensington community. Spaces on this course are limited, we will notify you if you have been allocated a place.
