#ArtMatters: Celebrating the Transformative Power of Art in Our Communities
#ArtMatters campaign

We are thrilled to launch #ArtMatters, a campaign celebrating the importance of art, creativity, and art spaces in transforming lives and communities.

For over 50 years, ACAVA (Association for Cultural Advancement through Visual Art) has championed the belief that art is for everyone. Our mission to unlock the creative potential of individuals and communities has inspired countless initiatives, from health and wellbeing programmes to affordable workspaces and professional development for artists. #ArtMatters highlights the ways creativity shapes our world—and why we must nurture and protect it.

#ArtMatters: For Health and Wellbeing

Art provides meaningful ways for people to reflect, connect, and grow. Research conducted by UCL and BBC Arts (2019) found that 76% of people felt creative activities helped them deal with difficult emotions, especially during challenging times. For participants in our programmes, creativity can serve as a distraction tool, helping them step back from stress; a contemplation tool, offering clarity and new perspectives; and a means of self-development, building self-esteem through skills development and fostering a sense of purpose and belonging.

ACAVA’s own work in Creative Health demonstrates these benefits in action. For instance, our Maxilla Men’s Shed has supported over 778 community members since 2019, offering a welcoming space where creativity helps foster mental wellbeing and connection.

#ArtMatters: For Fun and Inspiration

Art provides moments of discovery and inspiration for artists, makers, and workshop participants. A 2017 Creative Health report found that creative activities—including viewing and making art—can improve wellbeing by up to 82% and help people manage stress effectively. Whether it’s a child learning to draw, a family engaging in a collaborative workshop, or a professional artist experimenting with new techniques, art invites curiosity and play.

ACAVA’s Flourish programme has brought these opportunities to over 324 families since 2017, creating spaces for participants to learn, connect, and create in a supportive environment. These experiences spark joy and leave a lasting sense of achievement and possibility. Flourish is guided by five core values that shape its work and ensure accountability. It prioritises authenticity, fostering trust and genuine connections between artists and families. Discovery encourages creativity and learning in a judgment-free space. Exploration allows participants to embark on meaningful creative journeys. Play builds confidence, emotional bonds, and connections with nature. Wellbeing focuses on strengthening family connections and building supportive peer networks to bolster emotional resilience for lasting impact.

#ArtMatters: For Bringing People Together

Art fosters collaboration and understanding among artists, participants, and communities.

At ACAVA, co-creation is at the heart of what we do. Whether through public artworks, exhibitions, open studios, or community workshops, our programmes are designed with, by, and for communities. In our last full year of delivery, participants reported that our programmes led to 74% stronger relationships with family and friends and 70% greater optimism for the future.

Art brings people together to share ideas, tell stories, and create something greater than the sum of its parts.

#ArtMatters: For Changing the World

Art inspires new ways of thinking and approaches to real-world issues. A report by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and King’s College London (2020) found that of surveyed artists working in social practice, most believe that their role as an artist is to facilitate the voice of community participants.

ACAVA’s emphasis on creative placemaking channels the power of art into community regeneration. Through culture-led initiatives, we advocate for inclusive, sustainable development and empower communities to reimagine their futures.

Art helps participants and practitioners alike explore different perspectives and envision creative solutions to today’s challenges.

#ArtMatters: For Our Communities

Art plays a key role in building vibrant, thriving communities. ACAVA’s commitment to affordable studio spaces, professional development and community-based programmes ensures that artists and participants have the resources they need to develop. Today, we support a growing network of over 400 creative practitioners and cultural organisations across London, Essex, and Stoke-on-Trent.

Beyond the social impact, art contributes significantly to the economy. According to Arts Council England, art and culture contributes £10.6 billion to the economy and culture brings £850m to the UK through tourism, each year. ACAVA’s initiatives not only enrich lives but also help build sustainable careers for artists and cultural practitioners.
